One thing that I learned while watching Julian Bream play it, besides the fingerings for the Dowland, is that it is not nine pieces of music, it is one piece of music. Britten wrote this work for guitarist Julian Breamwho had received high praise for his collaborations with tenor Peter Pears in the songs of John Dowland. More specifically Britten wanted to focus on the moment between waking and sleeping, and the curious thoughts and noises that occur at this time. After the drama and tumult of the passacaglia this very pure, hyaline presentation of the tune was very affecting. It was such a challenge and took at least a year of constant work.
